Lifestyle Bluetooth Tracker

Tired of losing their keys, a group of friends founded Chipolo in 2013. Now an international brand, Chipolo creates smart, colourful item finders that help users track lost possessions across 195 countries. In 2022, Chipolo approached BLOND to redefine the product strategy for two of its flagship devices: the LOOP key finder and CARD wallet tracker. The goal was to reposition these products at the intersection of tech and fashion accessories, setting the brand apart in a crowded market.

BLOND studied the client’s insights and conducted supplementary market and aesthetic research to inform a brand product strategy with opportunity areas for positioning creative directions. To frame the design task, we analysed both the structure and technology of the products as well as recurring pain points mentioned by Chipolo’s users. Key considerations included: how to make the button less inconspicuous, how to make the keyring attachment more user-friendly, and how to address a perception of cheapness in the current product’s appearance.

LOOP was reimagined with a premium, minimal design offered in six curated colours. The palette balances sophistication with playful accents that reflect Chipolo’s brand DNA. The ultrasonically welded ABS casing—made with 50% post-consumer recycled plastic—features a matte finish with a raised logo, delivering subtle branding. A high-gloss circular area highlights the internal button, activated by a gentle squeeze between the thumb and forefinger—making the interaction intuitive and satisfying.

Internally, a redesigned inner housing optimises the layout and firmly secures a silicon strap within—aiding in the ergonomic attachment to keyrings. A tight seal and minimal split line prevent the exterior surface from attracting dirt and grime.

The CARD item finder shares the same design language but has subtle differences tailored to its use. The matte finish maximises friction, preventing it from slipping out of wallets, while the glossy circular button and logo offer tactile contrast and visual clarity.

As a result of our collaboration, Chipolo’s products have evolved into lifestyle-led, rational, and refined devices—broadening their appeal and confidently placing the brand between the worlds of consumer electronics and fashion-forward accessories.
